when it rains…
I think that it was an INXS song that had the line ‘sometimes you kick, sometimes you get kicked’. I like to think that i’ve finally grown up enough not to question the motives of the universe during a downpour of bad luck/circumstances/relations.
This week has been a doozy on both the home and work fronts. Nothing much to do except to find some shelter and wait it out. Hopefully, by next week, you’ll look and find a picture of a rainbow and read about how life is too wonderful for words. I’m not holding my breath, however. In the Philippines, the truism that when it rains, it pours, is truer than most places.
The only thing that i can say is that for anyone considering overseas employment–BE CAREFUL! Here in the Philippines, even filipinos have pretty much zero protection against employers that make up for what they lack in integrity with malice.
When i worked in the Chicago Public Schools, I thought that, while not perfect, there was a need for the antagonism between the school system and the union. If either party had their way completely, it would have been a complete educational disaster. Because of the antagonism between them, it left a little place where teaching and learning became possible and somewhat tolerable.
Here, there is no such space. I have a contract that isn’t worth the paper that it is printed on and I work with sheep who are afraid to stand up for themselves. The prevailing attitude in the Philippines seems to be, “it could be worse.”
